Early Career and Public Service
After finishing his studies, Alfonso Osorio became a lawyer. In 1953, he joined the State Lawyers Corps. This group is made up of special lawyers who work for the Spanish government. He worked in cities like Cuenca and Toledo.
Later, he also worked for the Legal Service of the Spanish Air Force. This meant he gave legal advice to the air force. He also held several jobs in business management.
Political Life and the Transition
Alfonso Osorio became a member of the Francoist Cortes. This was like a parliament during the time Spain was ruled by General Franco.
Helping Spain Change
After Franco's rule ended, Spain began a period called the "Transition." This was a time when Spain changed from a dictatorship to a democracy. Alfonso Osorio was very important during this period.
He became the Minister of the Presidency and the Second Vice President. He worked under two prime ministers, Carlos Arias Navarro and then Adolfo Suárez. He was a very close helper to Adolfo Suárez during these difficult times of change.
Serving in Parliament
From 1977 to 1979, Osorio was a member of the Senate. The Senate is one of the two parts of Spain's parliament.
After leaving the government, Osorio led a political party called the Progressive Democratic Party. He led this party until September 1979.
Later, he joined another political party called the People's Alliance. He represented the region of Madrid in the Congress of Deputies until 1986. The Congress of Deputies is the other part of Spain's parliament. Then, he represented the region of Cantabria until 1989.
Later Life and Family
After 1989, Alfonso Osorio decided to leave politics. He stepped down from his role in parliament and left the People's Alliance party.
Alfonso Osorio passed away on 27 August 2018, in his hometown of Santander. He was 94 years old.
He was married to María Teresa Iturmendi Gómez-Nales. They had three children together.
