Alfonso de la Cerda, also known as Alfonso of Spain, was an important person from a noble family. He was born in France in 1289 and passed away in Gentilly, France, in 1327.
Alfonso belonged to the Castilian House of Ivrea. He held several important positions during his life. These included being the Archdeacon of Paris, the Baron of Lunel, and the Lord of Tafalla & Caparroso. He was the oldest son of Alfonso de la Cerda, who was known as "the disinherited."
Alfonso's Life Story
Alfonso de la Cerda's father, Alfonso "the disinherited," moved to France. This was the home country of his grandmother. In France, his second cousin, Charles IV of France, made his father the Baron of Lunel. It was in France that Alfonso of Spain was born.
Alfonso of Spain took on important roles as he grew up.
- In 1322, he became the Archdeacon of Paris. This was a high position in the church.
- In 1324, he became the Baron of Lunel, just like his father.
- In 1325, he also became the Lord of Tafalla and Caparroso.
Alfonso passed away in 1327 when he was 38 years old.
Alfonso's Family
Alfonso of Spain married a woman named Isabelle d'Antoing. She was also known as the Viscountess Ghent. Isabelle was the daughter of Hugh IV, who was the Lord of Antoing, and Mary, the Viscountess Ghent.
Alfonso and Isabelle had one known child:
- Charles de la Cerda (1327-1354): Charles grew up to become the Count of Angoulême. He also held the important military title of Constable of France.
