Alfred Erich Senn (born April 12, 1932 – died March 8, 2016) was a well-known history professor. He taught at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was born and passed away in Madison, Wisconsin.
Alfred was born in Madison, Wisconsin. His father, Alfred Senn, was a Swiss expert in languages. His father taught at the University of Lithuania. There, he met Alfred's mother. They married and moved to the United States around 1930 or 1931.
Alfred Senn studied history at several universities. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), in 1953. This was from the University of Pennsylvania. Later, he received his Master of Arts (MA) in 1955. He then earned his PhD in 1958. Both of these advanced degrees were from Columbia University. He focused on the history of Eastern Europe.
In 1961, Professor Senn began teaching. He joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He taught there for many years. When he retired, he became a professor emeritus. This means he kept his title after leaving full-time work.
Professor Senn wrote many books and articles. A lot of his work focused on the history of Lithuania. His book Gorbachev's Failure in Lithuania won an award. It received the Edgar Anderson Presidential Prize in 1996. This award was from the American Association of Baltic Studies. Alfred Senn passed away at his home in Madison on March 8, 2016.
