Alfred E. Steele was born on January 22, 1954. He is an American Baptist clergyman and a Democratic Party politician. He served in the New Jersey General Assembly starting in 1996. In this role, he represented the 35th legislative district. He left his position on September 10, 2007.

Alfred Steele's Public Service
Alfred Steele held several important roles during his time in public service.
Roles in the Assembly
From 2002, he was the Assembly's Deputy Speaker. Before that, from 1998 to 2001, he served as the Assistant Minority Leader. In the Assembly, Mr. Steele was the Vice Chair of the Regulatory Oversight Committee. He also worked on the Budget Committee and the Law and Public Safety Committee. In earlier years, he was the Chair of the Assembly's State Government Committee. He also served on the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee.
Other Public Roles
Mr. Steele worked as a Chaplain in the Passaic County Jail from 1990 to 1994. He holds this position again today. He also served as a Councilman and Council President for the Paterson City Council.
Education and Church Work
Alfred Steele earned a Bachelor of Theology degree. He graduated from Northeastern Bible College. Today, he is the Pastor of Seminary Baptist Church in Paterson, New Jersey.
Changes in 2007
In September 2007, there were serious concerns about Mr. Steele's actions. These concerns also involved other public officials. Because of these issues, Governor of New Jersey Jon Corzine asked Mr. Steele to resign from his seat.
Mr. Steele sent his letter of resignation on September 10, 2007. By resigning before September 17, 2007, the Democratic Party could choose a new candidate for the November election.
