Alfred FitzRoy was born on March 3, 1850. His birthplace was London, England. He was the second son of Augustus FitzRoy. Augustus was the 7th Duke of Grafton. His mother was Anna Balfour. Anna was the daughter of James Balfour. She was also the aunt of Arthur Balfour, a famous British politician.
Alfred had an older brother named Henry. Henry was the heir to the dukedom. Sadly, Henry died in 1912. This happened before their father passed away. After Henry's death, Alfred became the next in line.
Titles and Public Service
Before becoming Duke, Alfred held other titles. From 1882 to 1912, he was called Lord Alfred FitzRoy. From 1912 to 1918, he was known as the Earl of Euston. These titles showed his place in the noble family.
Alfred also served in the military. He was a lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards. This is a famous part of the British Army. He also worked as a deputy lieutenant for Suffolk. This role meant he helped the county's main representative.
Family Life and Marriages
Alfred FitzRoy was married twice. His first marriage was to Margaret Rose Smith. They married on April 27, 1875. Margaret passed away in 1913. Together, they had three children:
- Lady Lillian Rose FitzRoy (1876–1960)
- Lady Mary Margaret FitzRoy (1877–1966)
- William Henry Alfred FitzRoy, Viscount Ipswich (1884–1918)
William, their son, fought in World War I. Sadly, he died in an aeroplane accident on April 23, 1918. William had a son named John. John later became the 9th Duke of Grafton. William also had two daughters, Margaret Jane and Mary-Rose.
Alfred married for a second time in 1916. His second wife was Susanna Mary McTaggart-Stewart. They married on January 8, 1916. They had two daughters:
- Lady Elfrida Marie Susanna FitzRoy (1919–1920)
- Lady Cecilia Blanche Genevieve FitzRoy (1922–1974)
Lady Cecilia later married Lord Howard of Henderskelfe.
Later Life and Succession
On March 15, 1920, Alfred was again appointed a deputy lieutenant of Suffolk. This showed his continued commitment to public service.
The 8th Duke of Grafton passed away in 1930. After his death, his grandson, John, Earl of Euston, became the next Duke.
