Augustus Charles Lennox FitzRoy, the 7th Duke of Grafton, was an important officer in the British Army. He was born on June 21, 1821, and lived a long life, passing away on December 4, 1918, at the age of 97. Before he became the Duke, people knew him as Lord Augustus FitzRoy.
Early Life and Family
Augustus FitzRoy was the second son of Henry FitzRoy, 5th Duke of Grafton. His mother was Mary Caroline Cranfield Berkeley. She was the daughter of Admiral Sir George Cranfield Berkeley.
On June 9, 1847, Augustus FitzRoy married Anna Balfour. Anna was the daughter of James Balfour, who was a Member of Parliament. Anna was born on June 15, 1825, and sadly passed away on December 23, 1857.
Together, Augustus and Anna had four children:
- Lady Eleanor FitzRoy (1853–1905): She married Walter Harbord and had children. Walter was the son of Edward Harbord, 3rd Baron Suffield.
- Henry James FitzRoy, Earl of Euston (1848–1912): He married Kate Walsh, but they did not have any children.
- Alfred FitzRoy, 8th Duke of Grafton (1850–1930): He later became the 8th Duke of Grafton.
- Lord Charles Edward FitzRoy (1857–1911): He married his distant cousin, Ismay FitzRoy. Ismay was the daughter of the 3rd Baron Southampton. Lord Charles and Ismay had children, including Charles FitzRoy, 10th Duke of Grafton.
Becoming the Duke
Augustus FitzRoy became the 7th Duke of Grafton in 1882. This happened after his older brother passed away without having any children. As the second son, the title then passed to him. He held this important title for many years.
Later Life
The Duke of Grafton lived a very long life. He passed away in 1918 when he was 97 years old. His home was Wakefield Lodge, which is near Potterspury in Northamptonshire, England.
