Charles Alfred Euston FitzRoy, 10th Duke of Grafton (born June 4, 1892 – died November 11, 1970) was an important British figure. Before 1936, he was known simply as Charles FitzRoy. He was a member of the British nobility, a soldier, a politician, and a farmer. A Duke is a very high rank in the British peerage system.

Early Life and Education

Charles FitzRoy was born at Euston Hall in England. This historic home is near a town called Thetford. His father was the Reverend Lord Charles Edward FitzRoy. His mother was Hon. Ismay FitzRoy.

He went to school at Wellington. After that, he continued his education at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. This is a famous place where people train to become army officers.

A Life in the Army

In 1911, Charles FitzRoy joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers. This was an infantry regiment of the British Army. At first, his unit was stationed far away in Quetta, which is now part of Pakistan.

When World War I began in 1914, he was sent to France. This was a major battleground during the war. In 1917, he received a special role. He became an aide-de-camp and comptroller to Lord Buxton. Lord Buxton was the Governor General of South Africa at the time. Charles FitzRoy stayed in South Africa until 1920. He officially left the army in 1921.

From Soldier to Farmer

After leaving the army, Charles FitzRoy decided to become a farmer. He started farming in a place called Coney Weston in Suffolk.

From 1927 to 1936, he worked as a land agent. He managed the land for Owen Hugh Smith, who was his first wife's uncle. This work was done at Langham in Rutland.

In 1936, a big change happened in his life. He became the Duke of Grafton after his cousin passed away. With this title, he also inherited the family's large estates. These estates were centered around Euston Hall, where he was born.

His Family

Charles FitzRoy was married three times during his life.

His first marriage was to Lady Doreen Maria Josepha Sydney Buxton. They were married on January 24, 1918. Lady Doreen passed away in 1923. They had three children together:

  • Hugh Denis Charles FitzRoy, who later became the 11th Duke of Grafton.
  • Lady Anne Mildred Ismay FitzRoy.
  • Lord Charles Oliver Edward FitzRoy, who sadly died in action during a war in 1944.

A year after his first wife's death, he married Lucy Eleanor Barnes. They were married on October 6, 1924. Lucy was a cousin of his first wife. She passed away in 1943. They had two children:

  • Lord Edward Anthony Charles FitzRoy.
  • Lord Michael Charles FitzRoy, who went missing and was presumed drowned in the Solomon Islands in 1954.

His third marriage was to Rita Emily Carr-Ellison. They were married on July 18, 1944. Rita passed away in 1970.

Charles FitzRoy himself passed away in Bury St Edmunds on November 11, 1970.
