Early Life and Education
Alfred Hemsley was born in Ealing, England. His father, Alexander Hemsley, was a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer. His mother was Catherine Blackett.
Alfred went to the University of Oxford in England. He studied hard and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1886. This degree showed he had completed a wide range of studies.
Becoming a Lawyer
In 1886, Alfred Hemsley became a qualified solicitor, just like his father. This meant he was trained and allowed to practice law. Two years later, in 1888, he moved to Sydney, Australia.
In Sydney, he worked as a lawyer. He became a partner in several different law firms. Being a partner means he was one of the main owners or leaders of the law business.
A Career in Politics
Alfred Hemsley also had a career in politics. From 1927 to 1937, he was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. This council is part of the government in the Australian state of New South Wales. Its job is to review and make laws.
He first represented the Nationalist Party. Later, he joined the United Australia Party. Both of these were major political parties in Australia at the time. He served in the Legislative Council until he passed away.
Alfred Macartney Hemsley died in Sydney in 1937.
