Alfred Körner (born February 14, 1926 – died January 23, 2020) was a famous Austrian football player. He was known for being a great striker, which is a player who scores goals. Alfred also had an older brother, Robert Körner, who was also a well-known international football player.
Alfred Körner was born in Vienna, Austria. He had a very successful career playing football for many years.
Playing for Rapid Wien
Alfred Körner played for Rapid Wien, one of Austria's biggest football clubs, for a long time. He joined the club in the mid-1940s and stayed until 1959. During his time with Rapid Wien, he helped the team win the Austrian league championship seven times! He also won the Austrian Cup once and the Zentropa Cup (an international club competition) once. He played in 286 games for Rapid Wien and scored 157 goals, which is a lot!
Playing for Austria
Alfred Körner also played for the Austrian national team. He represented his country from 1946 to 1958. He played in 47 matches for Austria and scored 14 goals.
He was part of the Austrian team in two big international tournaments:
- The 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland. Austria did very well in this tournament, finishing in third place! This was a huge achievement for the team.
- The 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden.
Alfred Körner passed away on January 23, 2020, in Vienna. He was 93 years old.
