The Alfred Street Baptist Church is a historic church in Alexandria, Virginia. It started in 1803 in one of the city's oldest African-American neighborhoods. This area was known as the Bottoms.
A Church for the Community
In 1806, the Black members of the Alexandria Baptist Society formed their own group. They called it the Colored Baptist Society. This group later became the First African Baptist Church of Alexandria.
Early Leaders
The church welcomed its first Black pastor, Reverend Sampson White. He had also led the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. He also served at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City. In 1863, Reverend Samuel Madden became the next pastor.
Building Improvements
The church building has been improved over the years. Major updates happened in the 1880s. A new worship area, called a sanctuary, was built in 1994. The outside of the church kept its original look. However, the inside was made much better. The Alfred Street Baptist Church is located at 301 South Alfred Street in Alexandria, Virginia.
