Alfred Reuben Swann was a key person in developing the city of Tampa, Florida. He was born in Tennessee and later moved to Tampa. In 1905, another person from Tennessee, Eugene Holtsinger, joined him in the land development business.
Early Life and War Service
Alfred Swann was born on September 24, 1843, on his family's farm in Sandy Ridge, Tennessee. His parents were John and Sarah Swann. When the U.S. Civil War began, he was studying at Maurey Academy. He joined the army and served with Wheeler’s Cavalry until May 3, 1865. He rose to the rank of colonel during his service. He lived to be almost 83 years old.
Building Tampa, Florida
Swann played a big role in developing several areas of Tampa. He was involved in creating the neighborhood known as New Suburb Beautiful. He also helped develop the area along Bayshore Boulevard, which is a famous waterfront street in Tampa.
Through his company, the Swann Terminal Company, he had a major part in building up the port area south of Ybor City. This area used to be marshland and was called The Estuary. His work helped turn it into an important part of Tampa's port.
A Leader in Business
Besides land development, Alfred Swann owned other businesses. He had large citrus groves, which are farms for growing oranges and other citrus fruits. He also owned areas for timber, which means he was involved in the logging industry.
Swann was a very influential leader in Tampa's community and business world. He had a home along Bayshore Boulevard, showing his success and importance. His son, James T. Swann, later founded his own company called J.T. Swann.
