Alfred Gardner Wilmore (born November 15, 1924 – died March 3, 1996) was an American baseball player. People called him "Apples" because of a childhood habit. He was a pitcher in the Negro leagues from 1946 to 1950. He played for the Philadelphia Stars and the Baltimore Elite Giants.

Alfred Wilmore was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Benjamin Franklin High School. He got his nickname "Apples" when he was a kid. Instead of buying candy, he would buy apples and eat the whole thing!
Serving His Country
Before playing professional baseball, Alfred Wilmore served in the U.S. Army. He was a soldier during World War II. This was a very important time in history.
Playing in the Negro Leagues
After the war, Wilmore started his baseball career. He joined the Negro leagues. These leagues were where African American players could play baseball professionally. This was before major league baseball was fully integrated.

In 1952, Wilmore got a chance to play for a team linked to the Philadelphia Athletics. He played for their minor league team, the Lincoln A's. Minor league teams are where players develop their skills. Even though he played well, he did not make it to the major league level.
Later Life
Alfred Wilmore passed away in Philadelphia in 1996. He was 71 years old.
