Early Life and Music Studies
Alfredo Javaloyes López was born in 1865 in Elche, a town in Spain. The street where he was born is now named after him. He loved music from a young age.
In 1880, he moved to Barcelona to study music. He learned from important composers like Fabio Campano and Felip Pedrell.
Sadly, a streetcar accident injured his left hand. This meant he could no longer perform music himself. However, he did not give up on his passion.
A Career in Military Music
With help from his teacher Felip Pedrell, Alfredo decided to become a military music director. This job meant he would lead military bands.
In 1901, he became the music director for the Sevilla Regiment 33. This group was based in Cartagena. He stayed in Cartagena for many years, until 1918.
After that, he became the director of the Música del Batallón de Cazadores. This was another military band, located in Barbastro.
His Most Famous Song: El Abanico
Alfredo Javaloyes López is most famous for his military march, El Abanico. This song means "The Fan" in English. He wrote it in 1910. It became a very popular march.
Returning Home
After a long career in the military, Alfredo retired. He moved back to his hometown of Elche. There, he became the Director of the Municipal Band. He led this local band until he passed away in 1944.
