Alfredo Oscar Saint-Jean (born 11 November 1926 – died 2 September 1987) was an important figure in the Argentine Army. He was a division general and also a politician. He briefly served as the President of Argentina in 1982.
Early Career and Public Service
Alfredo Saint-Jean was a high-ranking officer in the Argentine Army. He joined the military in 1944 and served for many years. After 1976, the military took a big role in governing Argentina. This period was known as the National Reorganization Process. During this time, General Saint-Jean held several important positions.
In 1981, he became the interior minister. This means he was in charge of things like police and public safety. He was appointed to this role by General Leopoldo Galtieri, who was the president at the time.
Becoming President of Argentina
Alfredo Saint-Jean became the President of Argentina for a very short time. This happened on 18 June 1982. At this point, Argentina was being run by the military. The previous president, General Leopoldo Galtieri, had to leave office. This was because Argentina had lost the Falklands War.
Saint-Jean's time as president lasted only a few weeks. He served until 1 July 1982. After him, General Reynaldo Bignone took over as president.
