What Makes the Algernon Bangs House Special?
The Bangs House is located in eastern Augusta. It sits on the south side of Chestnut Street. This building is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a special roof shape called a clipped gable. The bottom part of the house is made of brick and stone. The outside walls are covered with wooden clapboards and shingles.
Unique Design Features
The front of the house faces north. It has a porch that wraps around to both sides. This porch has fancy wooden decorations. These include turned posts and carved brackets. The railing is covered with scalloped shingles. The windows on the upper floors are very unusual. Some are small and square. There is even a triangular window right below the roof. On the west side, the house has a tall, three-story tower. This tower has a pointed roof that flares out at the bottom.

The house was built in 1892 for Algernon Sydney Bangs. He was born in Farmington. Mr. Bangs became wealthy by building doors and windows. He was known for being a bit unusual. This might be why his house has so many unique features.
An Interesting Prediction
Algernon Bangs was quite forward-thinking. In 1897, he made an interesting prediction. He said that "flying machines will eventually become modes of public conveyance." This means he thought airplanes would become a common way for people to travel!
Later Uses of the House
In 1922, the Augusta General Hospital bought the house. They used it as a place for nurses to live. Now, the Algernon Bangs House is used for professional medical offices.
