Algernon Sydney Hartridge (born August 4, 1831 – died April 4, 1876) was a businessman who dealt with cotton. He also served as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Life and Work
Algernon Sydney Hartridge was born on August 4, 1831. His parents were Charles Hartridge and Mary Hubbard Green. He had two brothers, Julian and Alfred.
In 1855, Algernon married Susan Enoch Knight. They had five children together. Sadly, one infant did not survive, and another son, Algernon Jr., passed away when he was six months old.
His family attended Christ Church in Savannah, Georgia.
Algernon Hartridge started his own business that bought and sold cotton. It was located on Bay Street in Savannah. He was also a member of the Savannah Chamber of Commerce. He served on the boards of several important companies. These included the Oglethorpe Insurance Company and the Savannah National Bank. He also worked with the Tyler Cotton Press Company and the Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia.
On June 4, 1861, Algernon was elected as a first lieutenant in the DeKalb Riflemen Company A. His brother, Alfred, became a captain in the same company.
Algernon Hartridge owned several buildings in Savannah. In 1868, he built a row house on East Gaston Street. He also owned a property on East Charlton Street. Another building he owned was the Algernon Hartridge Duplex on Jones Street. He also owned the Algernon Hartridge House on Abercorn Street. This house is now known as Keys Hall and is part of the Savannah College of Art and Design.
His Passing
Algernon Hartridge died in Savannah on April 4, 1876. He was 44 years old. He passed away due to a liver illness.
His funeral was held at Christ Church on April 7. He was buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah. Important people like Joseph E. Johnston, a Confederate general, and Henry R. Jackson, a major general, helped carry his coffin. His wife, Susan, was buried next to him nine years later.
