The Alhambra Theatorium (also called The Alhambra Theater) is a really old movie theater located in the Haynies Corner Arts District in Evansville, Indiana. It was designed by an architect named Frank J. Schlotter. The theater first opened its doors on September 27, 1913, showing movies to the public.
Many theaters around the world were inspired by the famous Alhambra Palace in Spain. The Alhambra in Evansville was one of these. In the United States, only one other theater, a playhouse built in New York in 1905, is older than Evansville's Alhambra.

How Much Did It Cost?
Building the Alhambra Theater cost about $18,000 back in 1913. This was a lot of money at the time! It made the Alhambra one of the biggest movie theaters in Evansville when it first opened.
What Was Inside?
The theater wasn't just for watching movies. It also had a special shop where people could buy cigars. There was also a candy shop, called a confectionery, where you could get sweet treats.
Helping the Neighborhood Grow
The Alhambra Theater helped new businesses open up in the area around it. This part of town is now known as the Haynies Corner Arts District. The theater was a popular spot for many years. However, it stopped showing movies in 1956.

Over the past 100 years, the Alhambra Theater has been fixed up and updated several times. It is currently being restored again. This means people are working to make it look like it did when it was new.
A Historic Landmark
Because of its importance, the Alhambra Theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the building for future generations.
