Ali Amini (Persian: علی امینی; 12 September 1905–12 December 1992) was an Iranian politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Iran from 1961 to 1962. Before that, he held several important government jobs in the 1950s. He was also a member of parliament between 1947 and 1949. Many people saw him as a leader who wanted to make reforms and was friendly with the United States.

Early Life and Education

Ali Amini was born in Tehran on 12 September 1905. His mother, Fakhr-ol-dowleh, was the granddaughter of Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar, a former king of Iran. His father, Mohsen Amin-ol-dowleh, was also an important statesman.

Ali Amini first studied in Iran at a school called Darolfonoon. Later, he moved to France to continue his education. He earned a law degree from Grenoble University. After that, he got his PhD in economics from Paris. His PhD paper was about how Iran controlled its foreign trade.

When he returned to Iran, he started working at the Ministry of Justice.

Political Career

Ali Amini helped start the Democrat Party of Iran. He became a member of parliament with this party. His first job as a minister was in the government of Ali Mansur.

He also worked as a minister in the government of Mohammad Mosaddegh. However, he left Mosaddegh's government in July 1952. Later, he worked with the government that came after 1953. He became the minister of economic affairs until 1955. Then, he was appointed as the justice minister in 1955.

In 1956, he became the Ambassador of Iran to the United States. He held this position until 1958. He was known for being friendly with the United States. This made the Shah, Mohammad Reza Shah, feel a bit uneasy. The Shah did not fully trust Amini's popularity. Because of this, his time as ambassador ended in 1958.

In 1961, Ali Amini was chosen to be the Prime Minister of Iran. He worked to bring changes to the country. But in July 1962, the Shah replaced him with Asadollah Alam. Years later, in the late 1970s, Amini tried to return to politics. He became an advisor to the Shah during the Shah's last years in power.

Personal Life

Ali Amini married Batoul Voosough in 1932. She passed away in 1992. They had one son named Iraj. Batoul was the daughter of Hasan Voosough Al Dawlah. Her brother was Ahmad Qavam, who was also a well-known politician.

Awards and Honours

In 1962, Ali Amini received a special award from France called the Grand Croix of the Legion of Honor.

Later Years and Death

In 1979, Ali Amini moved to Paris, France. While there, he led a group called the Front for the Liberation of Iran. This group wanted to bring back the monarchy in Iran. He wrote a book about his life, which was published by Harvard University.

Ali Amini passed away in Paris on 12 December 1992, at the age of 87. He was buried in Passy Cemetery in Paris.
