Alfons Mitgutsch, known as Ali Mitgutsch (born August 21, 1935), was a German author and illustrator. He is famous for creating a special kind of picture book. These books are known as Wimmelbilder books.

Early Life

Ali Mitgutsch was born in Munich, Germany. During World War II, his family had to leave Munich. They moved to a place called Allgäu to escape bombings. After the war, they returned to Munich. Ali Mitgutsch then trained to become a lithographer. This job involves printing images.

Career

In the 1960s, a child psychologist named Kurt Seelmann inspired Ali Mitgutsch. He encouraged Ali to create a new kind of picture book for children.

Ali Mitgutsch became very well-known for his Wimmelbilder books. These books show busy everyday scenes in a single large painting. The pictures often spread across two pages. His first book in this style was Rundherum in meiner Stadt. This book means "Around in my city" and was released in 1968.

Ali Mitgutsch lived in Munich. The city often inspired his paintings.
