Ali Tanrıyar (born March 14, 1914 – died May 25, 2017) was a famous Turkish doctor, politician, and sports leader. He was the Minister of Interior for Turkey and also led the well-known sports club Galatasaray S.K. He lived a very long life, reaching 103 years old!
Ali Tanrıyar was born in Greece when it was part of the Ottoman Empire in 1914. His family later moved to Turkey and settled in the Kırkağaç district of Manisa Province.
He was married and had one child, plus two grandchildren. In 2014, he celebrated his 100th birthday. Ali Tanrıyar was also related to a former Turkish prime minister and president, Turgut Özal.
A Skilled Doctor
Ali Tanrıyar studied medicine at Istanbul University. From 1944 to 1976, he became a specialist in internal medicine at the same university. An internist is a doctor who treats adult illnesses.
In 1972, he started working at the Taksim Beyoğlu Emergency Hospital in Istanbul. He was the clinic chief and head doctor there until 1979. For 41 years, from 1942 to 1983, he also worked as the team doctor for Galatasaray S.K. without asking for payment.
A Political Leader
On May 20, 1983, Ali Tanrıyar helped start the Motherland Party (ANAP). This was a new political party in Turkey.
He was elected as a representative for Istanbul in the parliament after the 1983 elections. The parliament is where laws are made for the country.
From December 13, 1983, to October 26, 1984, Tanrıyar served as the Minister of the Interior. This is a very important government job. He was elected again in the 1987 elections.
A Sports Administrator
Ali Tanrıyar was also a board member of the big sports club Galatasaray. In 1986, he became the president of Galatasaray S.K. He held this important position for two terms, until 1990.
During his time as president, the club did very well in sports and also financially. In the 1986-87 season, Galatasaray's football team won the league championship. This was their first win in 14 years!
The club also won titles in 16 different sports during his leadership. The football team even reached the semifinals of the 1988–89 European Cup. This was a huge achievement, as they were the first Turkish club to do so.
His Final Years
Ali Tanrıyar passed away on May 25, 2017, at the age of 103. He was buried at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery in Istanbul. Before his burial, a special ceremony was held at the Türk Telekom Arena. This is the home stadium of Galatasaray S.K., the club he loved and led. A religious funeral also took place at Teşvikiye Mosque.
