Yıldırım Akbulut (born September 2, 1935 – died April 14, 2021) was an important Turkish politician. He was a leader of the Motherland Party, also known as ANAP. Akbulut served as the Prime Minister of Turkey and was also the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament two times.
He was a lawyer by profession. Akbulut helped start the Motherland Party in 1983. He became a member of Parliament in the 1983 election. In 1984, he became the Minister of the Interior under Prime Minister Turgut Özal. After serving until 1987, Akbulut was chosen to be the Speaker of Parliament, a role he held until 1989.
In 1989, Turgut Özal became the 8th President of Turkey. Özal then chose Akbulut to take over as Prime Minister. Akbulut became the 20th Prime Minister of Turkey. He was seen by many as someone who followed President Özal's lead. In 1991, he lost his party's leadership election to Mesut Yılmaz and left office. In 1999, he was elected Speaker of Parliament for a second time.

Early Life and Education
Yıldırım Akbulut was born in Erzincan, a city in Turkey, on September 2, 1935. His father worked as a postman. After finishing high school, Akbulut studied law at Istanbul University. Once he graduated, he worked as a lawyer on his own.
Political Career Highlights
Akbulut started his political journey when he was elected to Parliament from his home province of Erzincan. He served as the Minister of Interior in the government led by Prime Minister Turgut Özal.
Later, he was elected Speaker of the Parliament. He held this position from December 24, 1987, to November 9, 1989.
Prime Minister of Turkey
After Turgut Özal became the President of Turkey, Akbulut took over as Prime Minister of Turkey. He formed the 47th government of Turkey on November 9, 1989. However, on June 15, 1991, he lost a party election to Mesut Yılmaz. This meant his time as Prime Minister ended. For a short time in 1992, he left his party but returned soon after.
Second Term as Speaker
On May 20, 1999, Yıldırım Akbulut was elected Speaker of the Grand National Assembly for a second time. He served in this role until September 30, 2000.

In Turkish politics, the name 'Yıldırım Akbulut' has become a phrase used to describe a "political puppet." This means a politician who holds a high position but is actually making decisions on behalf of someone else who is more powerful. For example, when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected President in 2014, the media wondered who would be Erdoğan's "Yıldırım Akbulut" (the new prime minister who would follow his lead).
Personal Life and Death
Yıldırım Akbulut was married and had three children. He passed away in Ankara on April 14, 2021, at the age of 85. He was buried at the Turkish State Cemetery.
