His Political Journey
Starting in Politics
In 1983, Ömer İzgi helped start a political group called the Conservative Party. A few years later, in 1985, this party changed its name to the Nationalist Labour Party. İzgi became an important leader in this new party.
In 1993, the Nationalist Labour Party changed its name again. It became the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), which is still a major party in Turkey today. İzgi led the MHP's branch in Ankara and also served as a Deputy Leader for the whole party.
Becoming Speaker of Parliament
In the 1999 general election, İzgi was elected to the Parliament as an MP for Konya. After that, he became the leader of the MHP's group in Parliament.
In 2000, İzgi was chosen to be the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly. This is a very important job, like being the head of the country's main law-making assembly. He held this position until the next general election in November 2002.
In the 2002 election, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) did not get enough votes to enter Parliament. Because of this, Ömer İzgi and all other MHP MPs lost their seats.
