Alia Malek's Life and Work
Alia Malek was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1974. Her parents moved to the United States from Syria. She went to Johns Hopkins University and graduated in 1996.
After college, Alia studied law. She earned a special law degree called a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She then worked as a civil rights lawyer. This means she helped protect people's basic rights. She worked for the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
Later, Alia decided to study journalism. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University. She then started her career as a writer. Her first book was published in 2009. It was called A Country Called Amreeka.
From 2011 to 2013, Alia lived in Damascus, Syria. This experience inspired her memoir. A memoir is a book about a person's own life. Her memoir is titled The Home That Was Our Country.
Alia also worked as a senior writer for Al Jazeera America. Her articles have appeared in many famous publications. These include The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Nation.
