Alice Ellen Lauentine Charbonnet (born October 12, 1858, in Cincinnati, Ohio – died June 1, 1914, in Paris, France) was a talented Australian composer. She wrote music in the Romantic and Classical styles.

Her father was a judge from France. Alice grew up traveling and living in many different countries. She married a violinist named Frederick William Kellermann. Their daughter, Annette Kellermann, became very famous. Annette was a champion swimmer, a stage performer, a movie actress, and a teacher.

Starting a Music School in Sydney

Alice and Frederick opened a music school together. It was located on Phillip Street in Sydney, Australia. Alice quickly became a well-known musician in Sydney. She often performed at concerts and special events.

She gave many afternoon recitals at their school. She also performed at her home in Potts Point. Alice was a popular performer at larger public concerts too.

Teaching Music in Melbourne

In 1901, Alice moved to Melbourne without her husband. She became a music teacher at Simpson's School in Mentone. Alice was a highly respected teacher. She was able to charge high fees for her lessons. This was because of her great experience. Her students also achieved excellent results.

Retirement in Paris

Alice retired in 1907 and moved to Paris, France. Even after retiring, she continued to give concerts. She shared her beautiful music with audiences there.

Famous Students of Alice Charbonnet

Alice taught many students who became famous. One of her most well-known students was Dame Nellie Melba. Nellie Melba became a world-famous opera singer. Alice also taught composer Lydia Larner. Another student was May Summerbelle, who also became a musician.
