Alice Dearing (born 23 April 1997) is a British swimmer who specializes in open water swimming. This means she swims long distances in lakes, rivers, or the sea, not in a pool. In June 2021, Alice qualified to represent Great Britain at the 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021.
Alice also helped start the Black Swimming Association in 2020. This charity works to encourage more people from BME communities in Britain to learn how to swim and enjoy the water. The charity has the support of Swim England, which is the national governing body for swimming in England.

About Alice Dearing
Alice Georgina Nana Dearing was born on 23 April 1997. She grew up in a part of Birmingham, England. Alice started swimming when she was about eight or nine years old.
She went to the Royal Wolverhampton School. Later, she was accepted into Loughborough University. There, she studied Social Media and Political Communication. Her coach at the university is Andi Manley.
Alice has family roots from both Ghana and England. She is one of the few Black swimmers to represent Great Britain in competitions. She was the first Black female swimmer to represent Britain at an Olympic competition. This happened in 2021 when she swam in the 10-kilometer marathon swim at the Tokyo Olympics.
Alice's Swimming Journey and Wins
Alice Dearing has achieved many great things in her swimming career. She showed her talent early on in junior competitions.
Junior Achievements
In 2014, Alice finished fourth in the 7.5-kilometer race at the World Junior Open Water championships. The next year, in 2015, she won a bronze medal at the European Junior championships.
A big moment came in 2016 when she became the 10-kilometer World Junior Open Water champion. She won by a very small margin, just 0.5 seconds, after a strong sprint finish. This was the first gold medal for Great Britain at a World Junior Open Water Championship.
Senior Competitions
Alice started competing at the senior international level in 2015. Her first big event was the 2015 World Aquatics Championships.
At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, she finished 17th in the women's 10-kilometer event. This result meant she just missed out on qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics at that time.
However, Alice achieved her best senior result in February 2020. She finished tenth in a FINA Marathon Swim World Series event in Doha. She was less than seven seconds behind the gold medalist.
Olympic Journey
Alice was part of special programs designed to help swimmers reach the Olympics. In 2016, she was chosen for British Swimming’s Podium Potential programme. This program supported swimmers who might win medals at the 2020 Olympic Games. In 2018, she joined the British Swimming World Class Performance Programme. This program gave her more training and competition chances.
Alice qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by finishing fourth in a qualifying event in Portugal in 2021. She competed in the women's 10-kilometer marathon swim at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing in 19th place.
Alice Dearing retired from competitive swimming in April 2024. She had not qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Awards and Roles
Even after her swimming career, Alice continues to be recognized for her impact. In 2022, she was named a Sunday Times Changemaker of the Year. She also received an award from the Sports Journalists' Association. The next year, in 2023, she was included on the BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour Power List.
Alice is an Ambassador for the British Elite Athletes Association. She is also a member of the Advisory Board for British Esports.
