Alice Joyce Brown (born Joyce; October 1, 1890 – October 9, 1955) was an American actress. She starred in over 200 movies between 1910 and 1920. She is famous for her roles in the 1923 film The Green Goddess and its 1930 remake.

Early Life and First Steps in Acting

Alice Joyce was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Her parents were John Edward and Vallie Olive McIntyre Joyce. She had a younger brother named Francis, who later became a manager in entertainment. Her father worked with metals, and her mother was a seamstress, someone who sews clothes.

Alice went to a special school called a convent in Maryland. When she was still a teenager, she moved to New York City. By 1900, her parents had separated. Alice and her brother Frank moved with their father to Falls Church, Virginia. Alice spent most of her childhood there.

Later, Alice lived in New York with her mother and stepfather. She worked as a model for photographers. She also appeared in "illustrated songs." These were popular shows where slides with pictures were shown while someone sang a song.

Alice was a respected actress during the silent film era. This was a time before movies had sound. A famous film producer once told her she reminded him of a cow! But even with that comment, she was a popular model. She posed for well-known artists and photographers of her time.

Becoming a Star

Alice Joyce got her first acting chance in 1910. Director Sidney Olcott cast her in his movie The Deacon's Daughter. This was at the Kalem Company in New York City. She worked for Kalem from 1910 to 1915.

Later, she joined Vitagraph from 1916 to 1921. After that, she worked for different movie studios on her own. Alice became a big star. However, her fame started to fade when movies began to have sound. This was a new technology that changed filmmaking.

Alice Joyce was married three times. Her first marriage was in 1914 to actor Tom Moore. They had a daughter named Alice Joyce Moore. They later divorced in 1920.

In the same year, she married James B. Regan. He was the son of a director at the old Knickerbocker Hotel. Alice had her second daughter during this marriage. They divorced in 1932.

Her last marriage was in 1933 to film director Clarence Brown. They separated in 1942 and divorced in 1945. Alice kept Brown's last name. After a car accident in 1946, Clarence Brown helped her with her medical bills.

Later Life and Retirement

Alice Joyce was sometimes called "The Madonna of the Screen." This was because of her beautiful looks and strong presence in movies. Her last movie was in 1930. After that, she and her ex-husband Tom Moore performed on the vaudeville circuit for a while. Vaudeville was a type of live stage show with different acts.

In her later years, Alice was active in women's groups. She lived in Northridge, California. She also enjoyed reviewing books and drawing sketches for her friends.

Alice was sick for several years. She passed away in 1955 from a blood and heart problem. She was 65 years old. Alice Joyce was buried next to her mother in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in California. She had two daughters: Mrs. Alice Moore de Tolley and Mrs. Peggy Harris. Alice left her daughters a collection of jewelry. This included a large diamond ring and a sapphire ring.
