Thomas J. Moore (born May 1, 1883 – died February 12, 1955) was an actor and director from Ireland and America. He appeared in at least 186 movies between 1908 and 1954. He was often chosen to play the main romantic character. Tom Moore starred in both silent movies and some of the very first "talkies," which were films with sound.
Tom Moore was born in Fordstown Crossroads, County Meath, in May 1883. He moved to the United States with his brothers, Owen, Matt, and Joe, and his sister Mary. They traveled as passengers on the S.S. Anchoria and arrived at Ellis Island in May 1896. Owen and Matt also became successful movie actors. Tom Moore acted in his first silent movie in 1908. He also directed 17 movies in 1914 and 1915, including a film called The Secret Room (1915).
About His Life
In 1914, Tom Moore married Alice Joyce, a famous silent movie star. They had a daughter named Alice Moore (1916–1960). Their daughter also acted in six movies with her father from 1934 to 1937.
On New Year's Eve in 1920, while in New York City, Tom Moore met a young French actress named Renée Adorée. They quickly fell in love. Six weeks after they met, they got married on February 12, 1921, at his home in Beverly Hills. This marriage lasted only a few years. In 1931, Moore married for a third time, to an actress named Eleanor Merry. His brother, Owen Moore, was also an actor and was married to Mary Pickford.
During the Great Depression, many movie studios faced hard times and some even closed. Tom Moore stopped acting in the mid-1930s. About ten years later, he returned to act in smaller supporting roles.
Tom Moore passed away from cancer at the age of 71 in Santa Monica, California. He has a special star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1640 Vine Street, honoring his contributions to movies.
