Alice Sarah Kinkead (1871–1926) was a talented Irish artist. She was well-known as a painter and later in her life, she also became a skilled silversmith.
Her Early Life and Art
Alice Kinkead was born in 1871 in a town called Tuam in Galway, Ireland. Her father, Dr. Richard John Kinkead, was a doctor. In 1876, he became a professor of women's health at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Because of his new job, Alice's family moved to Forster House in Galway.
Alice studied art at the Académie Delécluse in Paris, France. She also received education in Galway. As her art career grew, she moved to London permanently.

Alice Kinkead knew many important people in the art and writing world. Her friends included famous writers like Edith Anna Somerville, Violet Florence Martin, and Lady Gregory. She also knew the famous poets and artists W.B. and Jack Yeats. Other friends were Frances Perkins and Ethel Smyth.
Family and Later Years
Alice faced some sad times in her life. Her brother, Francis, passed away in a drowning accident in August 1887 on Lough Corrib. Later, during World War I, her other brother, Captain Richard Kinkead, was killed in action in Ypres in October 1914.
In 1921, while visiting Corsica, Alice Kinkead became good friends with the famous writer, Joseph Conrad. This friendship led to her painting his very last portrait in 1924. She completed it shortly before he passed away.
