Who Was Alice Tegnér?

Alice Charlotta Sandström was born in Karlshamn, Sweden. Her father, Eduard Sandström, was a ship captain. Alice loved music from a young age. She started taking piano lessons very early.

She went to a special school in Stockholm to become a teacher. After finishing her studies, she worked as a governess. Later, Alice Tegnér taught at a school called Djursholms samskola. She also worked as an organist at Djursholms chapel.

In 1885, she married Jakob Tegnér. He was a lawyer and worked in the publishing world.

Alice Tegnér's Music Career

Alice Tegnér wrote many well-known children's songs in Swedish. One of her most famous songs is Mors lilla Olle. This song was published in 1895 in a book called Sjung med oss, mamma! (Sing with us, Mom!).

Tegnér also wrote other types of music. This included classical music like chamber music and sacred music. She composed pieces for choirs, cantatas, and even sonatas for cello and violin. Her songs were inspired by both folk music and classical art music.

Her well-known hymnbook, Nu ska vi sjunga (Now We Shall Sing), was published in 1943. This book featured beautiful illustrations by the famous artist Elsa Beskow.
