Alice de la Roche was an important noblewoman who lived a long time ago. She was known as the Lady of Beirut and also served as a Regent of Beirut. A regent is someone who rules for a child or someone who can't rule themselves. Alice was the wife of John II, Lord of Beirut. She was also the daughter of Guy I, Lord of Athens. People sometimes called her Alice of Athens. She helped rule Beirut for her daughter, Isabella, when Isabella was the queen of Cyprus. Alice passed away in 1282.

Alice's Family Background

Alice de la Roche was born on an unknown date. She was one of six children. Her father was Guy I de la Roche, Lord of Athens. Her mother's name is not known, but she came from the important Villehardouin family. Alice's grandfather was Otho I de la Roche, who was also Lord of Athens. Her father, Guy, became the Duke of Athens in 1260. This title was given to him by King Louis IX of France.

Alice had two brothers and three younger sisters:

  • John I de la Roche: He became Duke of Athens after his father in 1263. He had no children.
  • William de la Roche: He also became Duke of Athens. He married Helena Angelina Komnene and had a son named Guy II.
  • Marguerite de la Roche: She married Henry I, Count of Vaudémont.
  • Isabella de la Roche: She married twice. Her second husband was Hugh of Brienne, Count of Brienne. They had a son named Walter of Brienne. Many famous people, like Mary, Queen of Scots, are descendants of Isabella.
  • Catherine de la Roche: She married Carlo di Lagonessa.

Marriage and Children

Around 1249 or 1250, Alice married John II of Ibelin. He was the Lord of Beirut. John's family was very important in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1260, John led a large group of Knights Templars into a battle in Galilee. They were defeated by the Turcomen people near Tiberias. John was captured but was later set free after a ransom was paid.

Alice and John had two daughters:

  • Isabella of Ibelin: She became the Lady of Beirut and also Queen of Cyprus. Isabella married three times but did not have any children.
  • Eschive of Ibelin: She also became Lady of Beirut. Eschive married twice and had children from both marriages. Her son, Hugh IV of Cyprus, later became King of Cyprus. When her sister Isabella died without children, Eschive inherited the lordship of Beirut.

Alice served as the Regent of Beirut for her daughter Isabella. This happened between 1274 and 1277, while Isabella was living in Cyprus.

Alice's Legacy

Alice of Athens, Lady of Beirut, and Regent of Beirut, died in 1282. Her husband, John, had passed away earlier in 1264. Many people who lived after them were descendants of Alice and John. These include Anne de Lusignan, King Charles VIII of France, and Mary, Queen of Scots.

In 1308, Alice's nephew, Guy II, Duke of Athens, died without children. Alice's daughter, Eschive, tried to claim the title of Duke of Athens. However, the title went to Walter V of Brienne, who was the son of Alice's sister Isabella.
