Alice of France (also known as Alix) was a French princess born in July or August 1150. She became the Countess of Blois by marrying Theobald V, Count of Blois. Alice was an important figure in her time, serving as a regent for the County of Blois. This meant she ruled on behalf of her husband and later her young son when they were not able to. She lived until 1197 or 1198.

Her Early Life

Alice was the second daughter of King Louis VII of France and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine. She was named Alix, like her aunt. At the time, kings really wanted sons to inherit their thrones. Because Alice's parents had two daughters and no son, their marriage faced problems.

In 1152, just a year after Alice was born, her parents' marriage was ended. Alice and her older sister, Marie, were still considered legitimate children. Their father, King Louis VII, was given custody of them. Soon after, their mother, Eleanor, left the French court. She then married Henry II, who later became the King of England.

Countess of Blois

In 1164, Alice married Theobald V, Count of Blois. Her older sister, Marie, also married Theobald's brother, Henry. This created strong family ties between these important French noble families.

Alice played a very active role in ruling the County of Blois. She served as a regent for seven years. A regent is someone who governs a kingdom or region when the rightful ruler is absent or too young to rule.

In 1190, her husband, Theobald, left for a journey to the East. Alice was chosen to be the regent and manage the county while he was away. Sadly, her husband died in 1191. Their son, Louis I, Count of Blois, was still a child and too young to rule on his own. So, Alice continued her role as regent. She governed the County of Blois until 1197, showing great leadership and skill.

Alice passed away in 1197 or 1198.

Her Children

Alice and Theobald had seven children together:

  • Theobald (who died in 1187)
  • Louis I, Count of Blois (who became the next Count of Blois)
  • Henry (who died in 1185)
  • Philip (who died in 1202)
  • Margaret, Countess of Blois (who lived until after 1230)
  • Isabelle of Chartres
  • Alice, who became an Abbess (a leader of a group of nuns) at Fontevrault
