Theobald V of Blois (born 1130 – died 20 January 1191) was an important French noble. He was also known as Theobald the Good. He served as the Count of Blois from 1151 until his death in 1191. Blois was a powerful region in France during the Middle Ages.
Life of Theobald V
Theobald V was born in 1130. His father was Theobald II of Champagne. His mother was Matilda of Carinthia. Even though he was the second son, Theobald inherited the county of Blois. This included the important city of Chartres. His older brother, Henry, received the larger county of Champagne.
Theobald first married a woman named Sybil of Chateaurenault. This marriage made him the Lord of Chateaurenault. Later, in 1164, he married Alix of France. Alix was the daughter of Louis VII of France, who was the King of France. Her mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Theobald mainly lived in Chartres. He made sure the city walls were repaired and made stronger. He joined his brother Henry and other nobles in opposing the young king Philip II. However, Theobald later made peace with the king. He then supported King Philip II during the Third Crusade.
The Third Crusade
The Third Crusade was a major military journey. It aimed to take back the Holy Land from Muslim control. Theobald arrived in the Holy Land in the summer of 1190. He died on January 20, 1191. This happened during the Siege of Acre. The siege was a long and difficult battle for the city of Acre.
