Her Life Story

Alicia Herrera Rivera was born in Valparaíso, Chile, on May 12, 1928. She felt that growing up in a port city shaped her personality. She loved reading, music, and studying.

Her parents raised her and her five siblings in a home full of respect and kindness. They gave their children freedom and trust. This helped Alicia become a determined and independent person.

She studied Law at the University of Santiago, Chile. She graduated in 1954. A month later, she married Alejandro Jiliberto Zepeda, who was also a lawyer and a politician.

After a military takeover in Chile in 1973, Alicia faced difficult times. She was even taken by secret police. Because of this, she had to leave Chile and live in other countries. She lived in Romania, East Germany, and finally, in Spain. This is called being in exile.

Alicia was a leader in fighting for women's rights. In 1987, she and other lawyers started a group called the Asociación de Mujeres Juristas Themis. This group worked to make sure women had equal rights and legal protection.

In March 1987, the government allowed some people who were in exile to return to Chile. Alicia Herrera Rivera was on this list. She flew back to Santiago on April 3, after being away for twelve years.

She took part in an important vote in 1988. This vote was to decide if the military leader, Augusto Pinochet, should stay in power. Alicia supported the "No" side, which won! After that, she went back to Spain, knowing she would soon return to Chile for good. Alicia Rivera passed away on April 6, 2013, in Santiago.
