Alicia Beatriz Pucheta de Correa (born on January 14, 1950) is a lawyer and politician from Paraguay. She served as the Vice President of Paraguay for about three months in 2018. Alicia Pucheta made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of Vice President in Paraguay.
Becoming Vice President
In April 2018, the Vice President of Paraguay, Juan Afara, left his role. He decided to run for a seat in the Senate during the 2018 general election.
Later that month, the President of Paraguay Horacio Cartes chose Alicia Pucheta to become the new Vice President. At that time, Pucheta was a Justice in the Supreme Court of Justice of Paraguay. She resigned from her judge position on April 30. Her nomination led to some discussions because of a decision she had made earlier as a judge regarding President Cartes's ability to run for a Senate seat.
Alicia Pucheta officially became Vice President on May 9, 2018. This was a big moment, as she was the first woman ever to be Vice President of Paraguay.
President Cartes had planned to resign from his presidency before his term ended on August 15, 2018. If he had done so, Pucheta would have become the first woman President of Paraguay. She also would have been the first woman to become both Vice President and President without being chosen by public vote. However, President Cartes changed his mind and withdrew his resignation request on June 26, 2018. This happened after the Congress did not vote on his resignation.
Her Life and Family
Alicia Pucheta is the daughter of Justo Pucheta Ortega and Beatriz Valoriani. Her father was also a talented musician. He was part of a musical duo that recorded the first album of Paraguayan music way back in 1926.
After the Chaco War, her father moved to Pilar to work as a criminal judge. There, he met Pucheta's mother. After they got married, they moved to Asunción, the capital city.
Alicia Pucheta was married to a fellow lawyer named Carlos Alberto Correa Vera. They had two sons. Their son Hugo Armando decided to follow in his parents' footsteps and became a lawyer. Their other son, Luis Arturo, chose a career in medicine. Sadly, Carlos Alberto Correa Vera passed away on June 30, 2016.
