Alicia Maria Carpenter, Countess of Egremont (Thomas Phillips)

Alicia Wyndham, Countess of Egremont (born around 1726, died June 1, 1794), was an important lady in British society. Before she married, her name was Alicia Maria Carpenter. She became the Countess of Egremont when she married Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont. An "Earl" is a noble title, and his wife is a "Countess."

Early Life and Family

Alicia was the daughter of George Carpenter, 2nd Baron Carpenter of Killaghy. Her father was a soldier and also a Member of Parliament (MP), which means he helped make laws for the country. Her mother was Elizabeth Petty. Alicia also had a brother named George, who later became the Earl of Tyrconnell.

Marriage to the Earl of Egremont

Alicia married Charles Wyndham, the Earl of Egremont, on March 12, 1750. Together, they had six children:

  • George O'Brien Wyndham (1751–1837): He took over his father's title as the Earl of Egremont.
  • Lady Elizabeth Alicia Maria Wyndham (1752–1826): She married Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, and they had children.
  • Lady Frances Wyndham (1755–1795): She married Charles Marsham, 1st Earl of Romney, and they also had children.
  • Hon. Percy Charles Wyndham (1757–1833): He never married.
  • Hon. Charles William Wyndham (1760–1828): He married Lady Anne Barbara Frances Villiers but did not have children.
  • Hon. William Frederick Wyndham (1763–1828): He married Frances Mary Harford and had children. Later, he married Julia de Smorzewska, Countess de Spyterki, and had more children.

Life at Court

In 1761, Alicia was chosen for a special role. She became the first Lady of the Bedchamber to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Queen Charlotte was the wife of King George III of the United Kingdom. A Lady of the Bedchamber was a high-ranking lady-in-waiting who helped the Queen with her daily life and attended to her needs. Alicia stayed in the Queen's royal household until she passed away in 1794.

Second Marriage

After her first husband, the Earl of Egremont, died, Alicia married again. On June 6, 1767, she married Count Hans Moritz von Brühl. They had one daughter together named Harriet Brühl, who passed away in 1853. Harriet later married Hugh Scott, 6th Lord Polwarth, and they had children, including Henry Hepburne-Scott, 7th Lord Polwarth.
