Frances Marsham, Lady Romney (born 9 July 1755 – died 15 January 1795), was an important English lady. She was known as Lady Frances Wyndham before she married. Frances was the wife of a British politician named Charles Marsham, 1st Earl of Romney. Even though some people called her "Countess of Romney," she actually passed away before her husband became an Earl in 1801.

Early Life and Family

Frances was born in England, at a place called Petworth. Her father was Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont. Her mother was Alicia Maria Carpenter. Alicia was the daughter of George Carpenter, 2nd Baron Carpenter.

Marriage and Children

Frances married Charles Marsham on August 30, 1776. At that time, he was known as the Honourable Charles Marsham. He was going to inherit the title of Baron Romney from his father. Charles Marsham later became the Earl of Romney in 1801, a few years after Frances had died.

Frances and Charles had four children together:

  • Charles Marsham, 2nd Earl of Romney (1777–1845)
  • Lady Frances Marsham (1778–1868), who married Sir John Buchanan Riddell. They had children.
  • Harriet Marsham
  • Amelia Charlotte Marsham (born 1782)

Mote Park and Legacy

The family lived at a large estate called The Mote in Kent. Lady Romney was very involved in designing the gardens and grounds there. People said she had "a remarkably fine taste in landscape scenery and horticulture." This means she was very good at planning beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces. Sadly, she died before all the work on the grounds was finished.

Lord Romney passed away in March 1811 when he was 66 years old. Their only son, Charles, then became the next Earl of Romney.

A famous artist named Sir Joshua Reynolds painted a portrait of Frances in the same year she got married. This painting was later owned by Michael Arthur Bass, 1st Baron Burton.
