What Was HaMa'arakh?
HaMa'arakh was a political alliance, like a team of different parties working together. They joined forces to have more power in the Israeli government. Their main goal was to create a fair society where everyone had opportunities. They believed in helping people through government programs and services.
The First Alignment: 1965-1969
The first time HaMa'arakh was formed was in 1965. It was an alliance between two major Israeli political parties: Mapai and Ahdut HaAvoda. These parties decided to team up for the elections.
In 1968, something big happened. Mapai and Ahdut HaAvoda decided to join together permanently. They also merged with another party called Rafi. This big merger created a brand new party named HaAvoda, which is known in English as the Labor Party.
The Second Alignment: 1968-1991
Even though the first alliance ended with the creation of HaAvoda, the name HaMa'arakh came back! In 1968, the new HaAvoda party formed a new alliance. This time, they teamed up with another party called Mapam.
This second version of HaMa'arakh lasted much longer, until 1991. Mapam was a party that came before Meretz, another well-known Israeli political party. The second Alignment was a very strong force in Israeli politics for many years.
