All Saints' Episcopal Church is a historic church located in Briarcliff Manor, New York. It's a special place that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.

The church was founded in 1854 by John David Ogilby. He owned a summer estate in Briarcliff Manor. The name "Briarcliff Manor" actually comes from his family's home in Ireland! The church building itself was designed by a famous architect named Richard Upjohn. It was built between 1848 and 1854 and later made bigger in 1911. Inside, you can see beautiful stained-glass windows, including one by John LaFarge and a rose window by Frederick Wilson of Tiffany Studios.

A Look Back: The Church's History

The very first church service was held on December 13, 1854. John David Ogilby officially gave the church building and its land to the community in 1863. He named it "All Saints' Church, Brier Cliff, Sing Sing, N. Y." after his family's Irish estate.

In 1910, the church building was made larger. It was given its current cross-like shape and officially opened again on November 1, 1911. Later, in 1945, the church bought more land. A new building called a parish hall was built there in 1949. This hall was officially opened on January 29, 1950.

Unique Events at All Saints'

In the 2000s, a group called the Sunday Photo Group met at All Saints' Church. They were led by photographer Mark Sadan.

The church also became famous around 2006 for hosting special services called U2charists. These were church services that included songs by the famous band U2. The church held two of these unique services. They estimated that about 70 percent of the people who came to these U2charists were visitors.

Important People from the Church

Some notable leaders of the church include Thomas Hazzard and John Adams Howell.

  • Thomas Hazzard founded Hope Farm, a place that helped children. He was also a football player and coach. Besides being a minister, he was a dairy farmer and even a missionary in Liberia.
  • John Adams Howell was an inventor. He created the Howell torpedo and other devices for the navy. He was also a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy.

The Church's Design

The church building was designed by the architect Richard Upjohn. It was built between 1848 and 1854. The design was inspired by Saint Andrew's Church in Bemerton, England. It's a great example of the simple English Gothic parish church style. This style was very popular in the area during the mid-1800s.

The church was first built with a simple rectangular main room called a nave. It had a high, slanted roof covered in slate. The outside walls were made of rough-cut granite stone. This style is known as Gothic Revival.

In 1911, the church was expanded. A transept (the arms of the cross shape) and a larger chancel (the area around the altar) were added. There is also a metal steeple where the roof lines cross.

Beautiful Stained Glass

The church has several beautiful memorial windows. One was made by John LaFarge in 1889. Another is a stunning rose window called "Adoration of the Magi." This window was created in 1911 by Frederick Wilson of Tiffany Studios, which is famous for its beautiful glasswork.

Other Buildings on the Property

Also on the church property are two other historic buildings:

  • A Stick Style rectory, which is the home for the church's leader, built in 1883.
  • An Arts and Crafts-style Old Parish Hall, built in 1904.

All Saints' Preschool

All Saints' Church used to have a preschool program. It was for children aged two to five years old. The program taught spiritual and ethical lessons. Kids also enjoyed class trips and activities like gym, music, playground time, art, cooking, and drama.
