All Saints' Episcopal Church is an old and important church located in Briarcliff Manor, New York. It became a part of the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This means it's a special building recognized for its history.

The church was started in 1854 by John David Ogilby. He named Briarcliff Manor after his family's home in Ireland. The church was built right on his summer property.

A famous architect named Richard Upjohn designed the church. It was built between 1848 and 1854. Later, in 1911, the church building was made bigger. It has beautiful stained-glass windows, including one by John LaFarge and a round rose window by Frederick Wilson of Tiffany Studios.

Church History and Growth

The first church service was held on December 13, 1854. John David Ogilby officially gave the church building and its land to the community in 1863. He named it "All Saints' Church, Brier Cliff, Sing Sing, N. Y." after his family's Irish home.

In 1910, the church building was made larger. It was shaped like a cross, which is called a cruciform shape. This bigger church was officially dedicated on November 1, 1911.

Later, in 1945, the church bought more land nearby. A new building called a parish hall was built there in 1949. It was dedicated on January 29, 1950.

Special Events and Notable Leaders

In 2006, All Saints' Church was featured on TV shows like Nightline and in USA Today. This was because they hosted special services called U2charists. These services combined traditional church worship with songs by the band U2.

The church held two such services. They estimated that about 70 percent of the people who came to these U2charists were visitors.

Some important rectors (church leaders) at All Saints' include Thomas Hazzard and John Adams Howell. Thomas Hazzard was a founder of Hope Farm. He was also a football player, coach, minister, and missionary.

John Adams Howell was a rear admiral in the US Navy. He was also an inventor. He created the Howell torpedo and other devices for the navy.

Church Design and Architecture

The church building was designed by the architect Richard Upjohn. It was built between 1848 and 1854. The design was inspired by Saint Andrew's Church in Bemerton, England. It is a good example of the simple English Gothic style that was popular in the mid-1800s.

The original church had a simple rectangular main room called a nave. It had a steep roof covered in slate. The outside walls were made of rough granite stones in the Gothic Revival style.

In 1911, a transept (a part that sticks out like the arms of a cross) and a larger chancel (the area around the altar) were added. There is a metal steeple where the roof lines cross.

The church has beautiful memorial windows. One was made by John LaFarge in 1889. Another is a round rose window from 1911 called "Adoration of the Magi," created by Frederick Wilson of Tiffany Studios.

On the church property, there is also a Stick Style house called a rectory, built in 1883. There is also an Arts and Crafts-style building called the Old Parish Hall, which was built in 1904.

All Saints' Preschool Program

All Saints' Church used to have a preschool program for young children. This program was for kids aged two to five years old. It taught them about spiritual and ethical values.

The preschool also included fun activities like gym, music, playground time, art, cooking, and drama. Children also went on class trips.
