All Souls Congregational Church is a very old and important church located at 10 Broadway in Bangor, Maine. It was built in 1911 and is a famous building in the city. A well-known architect named Ralph Adams Cram designed it in a style called Gothic Revival. Because of its history and design, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Today, it is part of the United Church of Christ.

About the Church Building

The All Souls Church stands near downtown Bangor. It is on a small hill that looks over the main part of the city. The church building takes up a whole city block. This area is surrounded by State, French, and York Streets, and also by Stetson Square and Broadway.

Design and Features

The main part of the church is made of stone. It has a shape like a cross when you look down from above. The longest part of the church runs from east to west. The front of the church faces east. It has a main entrance under a large arch. Above this entrance, there is a big round window called a rose window.

The church has a roof that is very steep and pointed. There is a tall, thin tower where the two main parts of the cross shape meet. Another shorter, square tower is located at the southeast corner. The sides and corners of the building have strong supports called buttresses.

History of All Souls Church

The story of the All Souls Church site goes back a long time. The very first church building here was put up in 1822.

Fires and Rebuilding

That first church burned down in 1830. A new building was then constructed by Charles Pond. Later, in 1859, another church was built on the same foundation. This one was designed by Harvey Graves.

However, this Graves church also burned down in a huge fire in 1911. This fire was known as the Great Fire of 1911. After this, the First Congregation joined with another group, the Third Congregation. The Third Congregation's church had also been destroyed in the same fire.

New Beginnings

Together, these two groups decided to build a new church on the site of the First Congregation's old building. They asked Ralph Adams Cram to design it. He was famous for designing buildings in the Gothic Revival style. The new church even used some stone pieces from the Third Congregation's old building. It cost about $110,000 to build.

Beautiful stained glass windows were added to the church between 1913 and 1947. These windows were created by Charles J. Connick, an artist from Boston.

Later Additions

The church building grew in 1953 and 1954. A school building was added, designed by a local architect named Eaton W. Tarbell. This new part was built in a more modern style. However, it was made to fit in well with the older church building. This addition is now named after Arlan A. Baillie.
