Allandale, Florida facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Allandale is a small, quiet community located in Volusia County, Florida, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own official city government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's usually managed by the county government.

Allandale is almost completely surrounded by the city of Port Orange. On one side, it borders the beautiful Halifax River. This river is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, which is a long path of connected rivers, bays, and canals along the coast.

A Look Back at Allandale's History

The community of Allandale first appeared in advertisements in December 1914. These ads were in the Daytona Daily News newspaper. It was described as a "bungalow community." This meant it was a place where people could buy land and build smaller, comfortable homes, often with wide porches. These homes were perfect for a relaxed lifestyle, especially near the water.

The advertisements really highlighted the lots right by the river. Living by the Halifax River was a big selling point, offering beautiful views and easy access to the water. Allandale also had its own special post office. This post office was open only during the cooler, winter months, from 1916 until 1941.
