Allen William Mark Coombs (October 23, 1911 – January 30, 1995) was a brilliant British electronics engineer. He worked at the Post Office Research Station in Dollis Hill, England. Coombs played a very important role in building one of the world's first electronic computers. This computer was called Colossus. It helped win World War II by breaking secret codes.

A Key Engineer in World War II

Allen Coombs was one of the main people who designed the Mark II version of the Colossus computer. This amazing machine was used at Bletchley Park during World War II. Its job was to break secret codes used by the enemy.

When Tommy Flowers, another important engineer, moved to other projects, Coombs took over the leadership of the Colossus project. He helped make sure the computer was built and worked correctly.

Years later, in 1976, a professor named Brian Randell researched the history of computers. He found out about the secret work on Colossus. Randell and Coombs shared their story at a meeting. Coombs later wrote that his team felt a great sense of purpose and excitement during those days.

After the War: New Inventions

After World War II, Allen Coombs continued his work at Dollis Hill. He worked on another early computer called MOSAIC. This machine helped with different kinds of calculations.

Coombs also led a team that worked on optical character recognition (OCR). This technology helps machines "read" text. His team developed ways for machines to read addresses on mail. This was important for making postal services faster and more efficient.

His work on pattern recognition was very advanced for its time. It led to the creation of an early machine that could read postcodes. This helped sort mail automatically.

Coombs often gave talks about how machines could recognize patterns. He would even show how the human eye sees things. He used a flash gun to demonstrate how our vision can break down images.
