Exploring Allendale's Past
Allendale is built on a hill overlooking Honey Creek. It is known for its winding roads and lots of trees. Many large houses were built here between the 1920s and 1960s. These homes show off many different architectural styles. Some examples include Prairie School, Arts & Crafts, and Ranch.
Famous Places in Allendale
Allendale is right next to the Country Club of Terre Haute. This private golf course has 18 holes and started in 1898. A special religious building, called a Carmelite Monastery, was also founded in Allendale in 1947. It is known as The Carmel of St. Joseph. A modern chapel was added to the monastery in 1970.
Important People and Their Homes
Allendale was once part of a large farm. This farm belonged to a rich businessman named William P. Ijams and his wife, Sallie Warren Ijams. Their farm, called Warren Park Farm, even had a stable for 100 horses!
A World Record Horse
In 1889, William P. Ijams and his partners bought a famous horse named Axtell. Axtell was a harness racing stallion. He set a world record and cost $105,000, which was the highest price ever paid for a horse at that time. Later, William's son, Frank Burch Ijams, had a grand mansion built in Allendale in 1929. A famous New York architect designed it.
The Coca-Cola Bottle Designer
Another important person who lived in Allendale was Chapman J. Root. He owned the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute. His company designed and patented the famous curvy Coca-Cola bottle! Chapman Root's home in Allendale was called Rocky Edge. It had a special party house with an indoor swimming pool, a greenhouse, a bar, and even a ballroom.
A Distillery Owner's Estate
Fred B. Smith, who owned distilleries, also lived in Allendale. He moved to Terre Haute in 1895 and started the Indiana Distilling Co. He later managed the Majestic Distillery, which was one of the biggest in the world. Its gardens were designed by a famous landscape architect named Jens Jensen. The gardens had a reflection pool and a large open meadow.
After a new law was passed that stopped the sale and making of alcohol, Fred Smith closed his distillery. He sold his large Allendale estate to the Knights of Columbus in 1921. They turned the property into the Gibault School for Boys.
The Allendale Lodge
The Allendale Lodge was another interesting building in the area. It was a rustic stone and wood structure with a big fireplace. Indiana State University built it in 1939 with help from the National Youth Administration. College students provided the labor to build it. Indiana State University later sold the lodge and its land to the Carmelites in 1999.
Allendale used to be outside of Terre Haute. However, as the city has grown, shops and businesses have moved closer to Allendale. Today, about 250 people live in this community.
