Allentown was started around 1842. A man named Jesse Carter Allen (1811-1892) was one of the first people to settle there. He used to be a sheriff in nearby counties. In its early days, Allentown's biggest business was lumber. Large companies like Robinson Point and Bay Point Lumber Companies owned a lot of land in the area. Besides lumber, raising sheep and cattle were also important jobs for the people living in Allentown.
