Alliance is a small, unincorporated community in Bollinger County, Missouri, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it is a group of homes and businesses that does not have its own local government like a city or town. It is located in the northwestern part of Whitewater Township.
How Alliance Got Its Name
The community of Alliance was named after a group called the Farmer's Alliance. This was an important organization for farmers in the late 1800s. It started in Illinois in 1880.
The Farmer's Alliance helped farmers work together. They wanted to improve their economic situation and get fair prices for their crops. This group was very strong and active in the Alliance community at that time.
Why "Jugtown"?
Alliance has another interesting nickname: "Jugtown." This name comes from the pottery that was made there a long time ago. The area had a lot of clay, which is a perfect material for making pottery.
Local people used this clay to create jugs and other useful items. This pottery making was an important part of the community's history.
Post Office History
Alliance once had its own post office. It was first opened in 1889. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1953.
