Alexandra "Allie" Linsley Long (born August 13, 1987) is an American soccer player. She plays as a midfielder, a position that controls the flow of the game. She has played for many top teams in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), including Portland Thorns FC, OL Reign, and NJ/NY Gotham FC.

One of her biggest achievements was representing the United States national team. She first played for the team on May 8, 2014, in a friendly match against Canada. Over her career, she played in 51 matches for her country and was part of the team that won the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Before turning professional, Long was a star college soccer player. She played for the Penn State Nittany Lions and later the North Carolina Tar Heels. With the Tar Heels, she helped her team win the national college championship in 2008.

Early Life and High School

Allie Long was born in Huntington, New York. She grew up with her younger brother, Patrick. She began playing soccer at a young age for a local team called the Northport Cow Harbor Mustangs. Later, she joined the Albertson Soccer Club, where her team won the state championship four years in a row.

Long attended Northport High School, where she was a star on the varsity soccer team for four years. She was so good that she was named Newsday's Player of the Year and Suffolk County Player of the Year after her junior and senior seasons.

College Soccer Career

Pennsylvania State University (2005–2006)

For her first two years of college, Long played for Pennsylvania State University. As a freshman, she played in all 25 games and helped the team have an amazing season, finishing with 23 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties. She scored four goals and had six assists.

In her second year, she scored six goals and had four assists. She also played for the United States U-20 team at the World Championships in Russia. She earned many awards for her great playing at Penn State.

University of North Carolina (2007–2008)

In 2007, Long transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a school famous for its women's soccer program. In her junior year, she scored five goals.

The next year, in 2008, Long helped the Tar Heels win the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. This is the biggest prize in college soccer.

Long has played for many professional teams in the United States and even in Europe.

Early Career in the WPS

In 2009, Long was drafted by the Washington Freedom in the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league. She played for the Freedom for two seasons, scoring a total of four goals and helping them reach the playoffs both years.

In 2011, she signed with Sky Blue FC. In her first game with the team, she played so well that she was named the WPS Player of the Week. She scored three goals for Sky Blue that season.

Playing in Europe and New York

After the 2011 season, Long moved to France to play for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). She played 12 games for the famous club and scored four goals.

When the WPS league in America folded, Long returned to the U.S. and played for the New York Fury in a new league for one season in 2012.

In 2013, a new professional league called the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) was formed. Long joined the Portland Thorns FC and became one of the team's most important players.

With the Thorns, she won the NWSL Championship twice, in 2013 and 2017. In 2015, she was the team's top goal scorer. By the time she left Portland, she had played more games for the team than anyone else.

In 2018, Long was traded to OL Reign (then called Seattle Reign FC). She played there for three seasons, scoring three goals and helping the team make the playoffs.

In 2021, Long joined NJ/NY Gotham FC. She played a key role in the midfield for Gotham and helped them win the NWSL Championship in 2023.

Playing Futsal in New York

During the soccer off-season, Long has a unique hobby: she plays futsal, which is a type of indoor soccer played on a hard court. She plays on competitive men's teams in Queens and Brooklyn, New York. The fast-paced game helps keep her skills sharp. Spectators, many of whom are Latinos, gave her nicknames like "la rubia" (blondie) because of her exciting style of play.

International Career with Team USA

Playing for the United States national team is a huge honor for any soccer player. Long first got her chance in 2014.

On April 6, 2016, she scored her first two goals for Team USA in a friendly match against Colombia. Later that year, she played for the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics, starting in three of the team's four games.

Her biggest international success came in 2019. She was chosen for the final roster for the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The U.S. team went on to win the entire tournament, making Long a World Cup champion.

Personal Life

In 2016, Long married Jose Batista. Her national teammates Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath were her maids of honor. Long and Batista later separated.

In May 2022, Long gave birth to twins, a daughter named Siena and a son named Trent.
