Allium ericetorum is a type of onion plant. It is found all over southern and central Europe. You can find it growing from Portugal all the way to Ukraine.
About Allium ericetorum
This plant is a perennial herb. This means it lives for many years, not just one season. It grows from a special underground part called a bulb, much like a regular onion.
Where it Grows
Allium ericetorum is common in many parts of Europe. It prefers areas with lots of sun and well-drained soil. You might find it in dry, grassy places or on hillsides.
What it Looks Like
The main stem of the plant is called a scape. It can grow up to 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) tall. This stem is round and smooth.
At the top of the scape, the flowers grow in a cluster called an Umbel. This cluster looks like half of a ball. Each umbel has between 15 and 45 flowers.
The flowers are white and shaped like small bells. Inside each flower, you'll see stamens that are longer than the petals. The stamens have brown tips called anthers. The part of the flower that will become the seed, called the ovary, is green.
