The Almendares River is an important river in Cuba. It is about 45 kilometers (28 miles) long. This river starts in the eastern part of Tapaste. From there, it flows north-west until it reaches the Straits of Florida. The Almendares River provides a lot of the water that the city of Havana uses every day.

Where the River Flows

The Almendares River flows right through the city of Havana. It acts like a natural border. It separates two big areas of Havana. These areas are called Plaza de la Revolución (which includes Miramar) and Playa (which includes Vedado).

Almendares Park: A Green Oasis

A special part of the river valley is known as the Almendares Park. It is also called the Metropolitan Park of Havana (PMH). This park is located a few kilometers upstream from where the river meets the ocean. It is a beautiful green space for everyone to enjoy.

Protecting the River and Park

In the past, some factories were built along the riverbanks. These included places that made paper, gas, and even beer. This caused some pollution in the river.

But the authorities in Havana are working hard to protect the river. They are watching and controlling water pollution. They are also trying to reduce the number of factories near the river. They want to keep the old trees and plants in the park healthy. The Almendares Park is slowly becoming a wonderful green area. It now has playgrounds, a few restaurants, and walking paths for people to enjoy nature.
