Almáchar is a small town and a type of local government area called a municipality. It is located in the Málaga province, which is part of Andalusia. This is a large region in southern Spain. The town is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Málaga city.

Around 2,100 people live in Almáchar. People from Almáchar are called Almachareños. The town's name comes from an old Arabic word, machar, which means meadow. Almáchar is known as the main area for growing moscatel grapes, which are used to make raisins.

About Almáchar

Almáchar is in the heart of a region called Axarquía. It sits about 200 meters (656 feet) above sea level. The town is built on a small hill. Two rivers, El Borge and Almáchar, flow nearby.

The area around Almáchar is very green. You can see many vineyards, where grapes are grown. There are also olive groves and fields of cereal crops. The Mountains of Málaga are close by, adding to the beautiful scenery.

Church of San Mateo

The Church of San Mateo is an important building in Almáchar. It was built in the 1600s. The church shows a mix of two old building styles: late Gothic and Renaissance.

Church Design

The church has three main sections, called naves. These sections are separated by columns and pointed arches. The roof of the central nave is different from the side ones. Its structure is hidden by a special panelled arch.

The front part of this central roof forms a cross shape. There are also two small rooms, called vesting rooms, which were built before the main church. These rooms have a fancy, detailed style known as Rococo.
