Alojz Uran (born January 22, 1945 – died April 11, 2020) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Slovenia. He served as the Archbishop of Ljubljana, which is the capital city of Slovenia. He held this important role from 2004 until 2009. He stepped down from his position because of health problems.
Life and Career
Alojz Uran was born in Ljubljana, a city that is now in Slovenia. He decided to dedicate his life to the church. On June 29, 1970, when he was 25 years old, he became a priest.
Becoming a Bishop
Later, on December 16, 1992, Alojz Uran was chosen to be an Auxiliary Bishop of Ljubljana. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop. He also received the special title of Titular Bishop of Abula.
On January 6, 1993, he officially became a bishop. This special ceremony is called an episcopal consecration. It was performed by Pope John Paul II, who was the leader of the Catholic Church at that time.
Archbishop of Ljubljana
Alojz Uran continued to serve the church with dedication. On October 25, 2004, he was named the Archbishop of Ljubljana. This meant he became the main bishop for the Ljubljana area. He took over from Archbishop Franc Rodé.
His official start as Archbishop happened on December 4, 2004. He led the archdiocese for several years.
Later Life and Passing
In November 2009, Archbishop Uran decided to resign from his role. He did this because he was having health issues.
In early 2020, his health became more serious. He had two heart surgeries and also suffered from a lung condition. Alojz Uran passed away on April 11, 2020. He was buried in the Ljubljana Cathedral in his home city.
